Six Steps to Healing and Liberation

My spiritual director Fr. Francis Donnelly has a little one page hand-out on Six Steps to Healing and Liberation that he keeps near his desk to pass out to his visitors that I have found tremendously helpful, not only for myself when  I encounter some area of woundedness that needs healing, but also as a guide for intercessory prayer.

I have, with his permission, adapted it a little by putting the prayers into the first person and adding the texts of the Scriptural references.

Six Steps to Healing and Liberation

STEP ONE: I declare and hand over for redemption by Jesus on the Cross all:

  •  Sins,
  • Traumas
  • Afflictions
  • Abuses
  • Lies,
  • Demons,
  • etc.

inflicted upon me or brought upon me by my reaction to evil—eg.

  • Bitterness
  • Rash vows
  • Judgments
  • Unforgiveness
  • Self-rejection
  • People-worship
  • Believing Lies,
  • etc

Isaiah 53:3-5   (RSV)

 He was despised and rejected[a] by men;
a man of sorrows,[b] and acquainted with grief;[c]
and as one from whom men hide their faces
he was despised, and we esteemed him not.

Surely he has borne our griefs[d]
    and carried our sorrows;[e]
yet we esteemed him stricken,
    smitten by God, and afflicted.
But he was wounded for our transgressions,
    he was bruised for our iniquities;
upon him was the chastisement that made us whole,
and with his stripes we are healed

1 Peter 2:24 (RSV)

2He himself bore our sins in his body on the tree,[a] that we might die to sin and live to righteousness. By his wounds you have been healed.

STEP TWO: I embrace the grace and forgiveness of Jesus for me and for everyone and I declare my forgiveness in the Name of Jesus for all the people responsible for these evils, whom I have resented, rejected or cursed, etc.—and that includes myself and even God.

Matthew 6:14-15 (RSV)

14 For if you forgive men their trespasses, your heavenly Father also will forgive you; 15 but if you do not forgive men their trespasses, neither will your Father forgive your trespasses.

John 20:23 (RSV)

23 If you forgive the sins of any, they are forgiven; if you retain the sins of any, they are retained.”

Matthew 6:9-19 (RSV)

Our Father who art in heaven,
Hallowed be thy name.
10 Thy kingdom come,
Thy will be done,
On earth as it is in heaven.
11 Give us this day our daily bread;[a]
12 And forgive us our debts,
    As we also have forgiven our debtors;
13 And lead us not into temptation,
But deliver us from evil.[b]

14 For if you forgive men their trespasses, your heavenly Father also will forgive you; 15 but if you do not forgive men their trespasses, neither will your Father forgive your trespasses.

STEP THREE:  I RENOUNCE and CANCEL in the NAME of JESUS the bondages and powers of each of the traumas, lies, curses, condemnations, demons, etc. in my life and I PLACE THE CROSS BETWEEN ME and all these oppressions.

Jesus gave authority to cast out demons and heal all ills.  “In the Name” means you have the AUTHORITY of JESUS.

Matthew 10:1 (RSV)

And he called to him his twelve disciples and gave them authority over unclean spirits, to cast them out, and to heal every disease and every infirmity.

Mark 16:17-20  (RSV)

17 And these signs will accompany those who believe: in my name they will cast out demons; they will speak in new tongues; 18 they will pick up serpents, and if they drink any deadly thing, it will not hurt them; they will lay their hands on the sick, and they will recover.”

STEP FOUR: I command IN THE NAME OF JESUS every demon connected to any of these evils to DEPART from me and from all that belongs to me forever.

(Take time to note what happens to you at this point.  Repeat, if needed)

STEP FIVE: I INVOKE the PRESENCE and Healing Ministry of the RISEN JESUS for the BLESSING OF GOD THE FATHER and the Workings of the HOLY SPIRIT into the memories to bring FREEDOM, JOY and RESTORATION to all wounded areas.

Luke 11:9-13 (RSV)

9 And I tell you, Ask, and it will be given you; seek, and you will find; knock, and it will be opened to you.

10 For every one who asks receives, and he who seeks finds, and to him who knocks it will be opened.

11 What father among you, if his son asks for[a] a fish, will instead of a fish give him a serpent;

12 or if he asks for an egg, will give him a scorpion?

13 If you then, who are evil, know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will the heavenly Father give the Holy Spirit to those who ask him!”

John 10:10 (RSV)

10 The thief comes only to steal and kill and destroy; I came that they may have life, and have it abundantly.

STEP SIX: I GIVE THANKS!  I RECEIVE REDEMPTION in JESUS CHRIST and DECLARE: I accept SALVATION and Kingdom LIFE into every part of Spirit, Soul, and Body.

Amen!

Philippians 4:4-8  (RSV)

Rejoice in the Lord always; again I will say, Rejoice. Let all men know your forbearance. The Lord is at hand. Have no anxiety about anything, but in everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known to God. And the peace of God, which passes all understanding, will keep your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.

Finally, brethren, whatever is true, whatever is honorable, whatever is just, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is gracious, if there is any excellence, if there is anything worthy of praise, think about these things.

One Response to Six Steps to Healing and Liberation

  1. Rev22:17 says:

    Deborah,

This is an excellent piece — very solid theologically, and pastorally effective.

I can add only one footnote. There is no way to find healing without embracing our hurt, our injury. Here, the paschal triduum is instructive: the glory of the resurrection (Easter Sunday) comes only after the pain of the passion and death (Good Friday) and the desolation of the tomb (Holy Saturday).

Let us all pray that many will find the path to divine healing through this article!

    Norm.
